Sint-Lucas : typography
Studies
Projects for school (Hogeschool Sint-Lucas Gent).
These projects were supervised by Michaël Bussaer (typography and research) and Erwin Clauws (typography and design).
Emilie studies graphic design at the Hogeschool Sint-Lucas in Ghent. She graduated with distinction in 2006.
‘Printed but not true’: a book with different versions of the same story. We see everything through coloured glasses.
‘Line spacings’: a story that gets more dark with every page. The book starts with one line on every page. The lines close up until the situation has become unreadable.
‘Addition of heavy words’: a movie critic writes about Lars Von triers ‘Dogville’. He uses heavy words. To lighten up the text a little, Emilie gave every heavy word a special font. In the end she added the words like on a bill. In chapter seven the word ‘apocalypse’ was used 14 times.
‘Black Box’: a book about the flight data recorder (a.k.a Black Box) in airplanes; the tape that records everything that happens during a flght. The book is a large strip of paper, covered with low-quality ink. Everyone who touches the book leaves fingerprints or scratches. Thus, the book becomes a data recorder.
‘Book of flight’: heroes and anti-heroes from the history of flight. It’s not about the relevance of what they did, but about the portraits that made history.
‘Typographics’: a combination of leftovers from the graphic art and small typographic books.
‘Script’: the oldest books were handwritten and hand copied, but we don’t write anymore. These days our computers can make a ‘handwritten’ text. As a kind of contemporary stunt Emilie copied a printed book by hand.
