Hänsel und Gretel

Scenography

Design and realization of set, costumes and programme book for the children’s opera Hänsel und Gretel.

Junge Kammeroper (Köln).

Hänsel and Gretel are little broom-makers. When their dad comes home drunk, they run away from home. The witch appears and enchants their brooms; she stands them upright in chunks of wood, which makes them look like trees. The children get lost in the enchanted wood. After they fall asleep, the witch finishes her trap. She sprinkles a path of brightly coloured candies through the wood. When the bag of candies is empty, she unfolds it and it becomes a magical cloth full of candy-papers. She attaches the cloth in between two trees and hides behind it. When the kids wake up, they are enchanted by the colours of the path and the witch’s house…
The programme book for this performance is divided in two: a part for grown-ups (the story in photos) and a part for children (the story in drawings that they can colour in). (2008)
